Old Styles That Instantly Date You
Updated: Sep 11
Our clothes say a lot about us, whether we realize it or not. They can communicate our personality, our social status, and even our age. In fact,
our clothes can instantly date us. For example, if you're wearing bell-bottoms and a tie-dye shirt, people might assume that you're stuck in the 1970s.
It’s funny, but true. Now, on the other hand, if you're wearing a crop top and high-waisted jeans, people might assume that you're a millennial or trying at least dress the part.
Clothing styles change quickly, and what's in fashion one year might be out of style the next. By wearing clothes that are out of date, we can unintentionally communicate that either you don’t care about your appearance or you just don’t keep up with the latest fashion. This can be particularly problematic in professional settings, where it's important to appear current and relevant; such as working in the fashion industry, social media influencer or retail.
As personal and wardrobe stylist here are 4 tips to consider if you think your style is outdated:
If you're still wearing clothes that were popular years ago that are not relevant now. Or if your friends & family have commented on your style looking a bit outdated and your reply is “This was cool in my day!”. There a good chance your fashion sense is outdated.
2. Clothes that don't fit.
It’s time to let the clothes that just don’t fit anymore go. Perhaps you’ve been waiting to get back in your favorite jean from the 9th grade or that old knitted sweater you handmade taking you 2 months to finish. I get it!
Saying goodbye is hard, but the saying goes "if the shoe doesn't fit don't wear it."
Let’s face it, clothes that are too tight or too loose can make you look like you haven't updated your wardrobe in a while or that you’re still trying to somehow relive the glory days.
3. Logos or branding.
Wearing clothes with the overexaggerated logos, we won’t mention which ones here, but if you’re giggling slightly to yourself, then you probably know them already. Simply put, they’re outdated and irrelevant with no place in today’s fashion.
4. Colors or patterns:
This one can be tricky. Certain colors and patterns can make your style look a bit dated, such as certain bright neon colors or certain prints that can be easily be tied to your
grandmother’s time period. If you’ve found them in your wardrobe it might be time to speak a few final words then say goodbye.
In conclusion, it's important to be aware of the message that our clothes are sending and to make sure that it's one we're comfortable with. By paying attention to fashion trends and choosing clothing that is both stylish and appropriate for our age and personality, we can ensure that our clothes are helping us to make a good impression.
